The snail yesterday was just a prequel.
Sunny brought in a mouse for his momma (a very dead mouse this time, thankfully), and I found him sitting on the stairs next to it so very proudly. Martha wasn't far behind, because oh JOY it was another mouse friend to play with!
She made miserable meowing sounds for an HOUR after I took the mouse out to the garbage.
Ugh.
In Torchwood last night:
I wasn't quite sure if they were trying for an 'ordinary guy forced to choose between the thing he wants and the thing he ought to do' plot, because really, Tommy couldn't have stayed, there wouldn't have been a then to stay in if the times had merged. It came off more as a 'Torchwood of 1918 screwed up big time' plot, because they forgot the little detail of if he forgets all his time at Torchwood, why would he do anything with the weird thingymabob in his hands? *snork* That said, I want to know more about the prior Torchwood. What was that about Harriet dying three years later that made Ianto all grim and such? The way he was looking at those photos suggests that something Big and Bad happened, possibly taking the whole team out. Details, people!
Also, I liked Tosh in this episode. It's given her a little more depth - not much, admittedly, but a bit. Gwen was her usual idiotic self. Dear Gwen: When running from a ghost on crutches that you know is just an image from the past, GO SIDEWAYS. Crutches aren't known for their great lateral mobility. Running backwards in a straight line won't get you anything. Idiot girl. Argh.
Also also - the Jack/Ianto scene? So very cute. So very very cute. But I think they're setting us up for major angst here. Ianto's going to get hurt. Because Jack's already done the 'look I'm dead and staying dead' trick.
And how much did I love Owen in this episode? Though I think a little of his 'looking out for Tosh' was less about him knowing about how much it hurts to fall in love with someone from the past, and more about him wanting to get together with Tosh. Which, you know, I'd have more sympathy for if he hadn't gone for Gwen the boyfriend-having girl first.
Also, Tommy is a bit daft, with his 'I can't even write you' bit. Yes, kiddo. You can write to her. She just can't write back. Letters do go forward in time along with everything else.
The real tragedy is what happens to Tommy - being shot for cowardice due to shell shock - happened a LOT in that war. And for the longest time, they weren't recognized on Remembrance Day - I think they got on the lists on year, and then were taken off, recently. I haven't kept up on the subject, but most of them were shell-shocked boys (and I do mean boys, recruiters weren't that picky) who were mentally unable to deal with the hellish conditions anymore. It is inhuman, really. Who needs alien monsters with stabby hands of death when we've got us?
Also, I just realized - either Jack is a bit of an idiot or he pulled a fast one for use in future plot - when John got a hold of both their wrist-watch-thingys, Jack reclaimed his. He should have reclaimed John's - John's hasn't been deactivated by the Doctor. Though evidently the messaging system still works on Jack's. Maybe Jack did take John's, because things happened very quickly there for a bit.
