So, massive storm o'doom has hit Davis.
It has also hit something to do with the power supply to my block, because we are very much in the dark. A large section of Davis is without power, and the rain keeps pouring down. Not much wind today - yesterday it was ripping across the valley, downing trees and lightpoles everywhere. A few cars (and a brand new shiny truck) got smushed under a fallen eucalyptus branch near the hospital. Fozzie spent the day with me, being very good in class and generally getting scritches from everyone who passed by. He's with me now, garnering praise and petting from the first-year students who walked in.
So, with both of us without power, Trapper and I went out on the town in search of a hot meal and entertainment. We managed to snag a table right by the fireplace at the Indian restaurant in town, and the food was wonderful (may had something to do with our other option being cold cereal in the dark), and then we went to see a movie.
Which movie, you say?
'I Am Legend'
Yeah. Stupid. I know.
So, my advice would be don't see this movie in theaters. It has plot holes you can drive a semi through, the animation bits are very obviously fake (a real disappointment after movies that do it so well, like 'Pan's Labyrinth'), and by the end, we just didn't care about Will Smith's character.
Plus? They killed the dog. With a fake pseudo-rabies virus. And Will Smith. Gratuitously. Mrr.
Also, how the heck is a virus supposed to make all the virus-infected, mad, eat-anything-that-moves people decide that other virus-infected, mad, eat-anything-that-moves people are on the same side and they should band together, rather than eating each other? And, why, after a male virus-infected-person attempts a rescue of the female-infected-person that Will captures, does he then go on his little blog thing and say that 'all traces of humanity are gone'? I mean... it makes no sense! And, like I said, the animation was horribly fake.
And the killing of the family? TOTALLY NOT NECESSARY.
Also, suddenly making the gal survivor an idiot to move the plot along? Not a fan, no.
And? You almost wanted to side with the virus-infected people (even if they helped kill the dog) - Will killed a lot of the virus people in his search for a cure. Like a whole wall full of Polaroids number. So who's the more dangerous, anyway? Sure, he found a cure, but someone's ethics got a weeeeee bit skewed along the way.
Also? When people showed up positive for the virus during the evacuation... in reality, they would have been herded off to some isolated spot, if not killed in the panic. Not stuffed back in with the general population and left to wail loudly about their fate without being killed by said general population. Srsly.
Anyway. Still cold, currently kinda wet, still waiting for the power to come back on. I'm posting from school, which does have heat (kinda), and light, and internet. Supposedly our power is supposed to come back around 4pm, but the storm has been getting worse all morning, and I wonder how that will effect repairs.
If anything, I can go to the Safeway in South Davis (which still has power) and get hot soup tonight - the fridge is definitely getting warm, and I haven't dared open the freezer. Hopefully the meat I was going to make into curry will be okay. *sigh*
Oh, housemate is home. With two of her New Zealand friends. I just about had a heart attack last night when I opened the door to my very dark house and was greeted by a sleepy male voice when I know I left no males, sleepy or otherwise, in the house when I left. >.> She's taking them to Walmart later to get American Candy and see a prime example of American Commercialism. There really really isn't much to do here with the power out, obviously.
I went to Walmart earlier, and got myself a nice warm blanket (it's been so cold here), and a big flashlight with batteries, and warm sheets, so I should be set (especially once the power comes back on!). I spent last night (after watching a movie about virus zombies who come out when it's dark) reading by the light of the little headlamp my dad got me for putting on snowchains in the dark of a storm. :D
