On the Road Again...
Jul. 2nd, 2004 09:19 pmReporting in from Medford, Oregon.
Got up ungodly early this morning so I could get in one last workout before the ten-day roadtrip - not much chance of exercise. Also watched some Last Samurai. Yes, I'm a wee bit obsessed, but the battles make for interesting watching while beating one's leg muscles into submission. I really need to go to the library when I get home and get some good films for distraction.
Took us forever to get on the road this morning. Just when we thought we got everything together, there would be the sudden "oh, did you get..." or "Oh, is the... clean?" Bother. At least we managed to avoid the Starbucks breakfast. I love Starbucks, but I'm on a diet. Yup, haven't had chocolate for... *thinks* A month and a half. Impressive, no? The only break was on my b-day, since one must have chocolate cake on one's b-day. Yup.
We listened to a radio show most of the time in the car today. We ordered a bunch of different programs from Amazon a few weeks ago. Today was the first third of 'The Fourth Tower of Inverness'. *snerk* I suggest everyone listen to this, but not while drinking soda. Oh, and not if one can't listen to sliiiiightly hokey seventy's religion/spirtualism without completely cracking up or becoming horribly offended. The characters are great though - Madonna Vampira, the energy vampire and very lonely lady; Frida, the girl with no pupils and a great fondness of cuban cigars; Minee Inu, the very strange Brazillian lady-type, Far-seeing Art the groundskeeper and all-zen-all-the-time-radio; Chief Whampum-Stompum... the list goes on and on. *grin* I thought it was great fun. I also think that Jack, the hero, ought to stop letting himself be drawn into the astral plane. He keeps getting half killed that way, silly goose.
Fell asleep somewhere after Redding and before Weed. Had a nice little snooze, listening to Alegria on my headphones and having very strange, but entertaining dreams.
There is a Harry and David outlet store here. *drools* Just in case someone out there doesn't know, H&D is known for very good gourmet-type food. Unfortunately my no-chocolate-no-junkfood diet precludes the scarfing of Moose Munch, the nifty treat they make of carmel-covered popcorn with almonds and chocolate (oh yes, it's that good). I swear, once I get down to a reasonable weight, I'm eating Moose Munch. Not much. Just some. Yum.
There's a fantastic quilting store here, with absolutely beautiful quilts on the wall. There's a book I need to get when I get back to SJ - Cats in Quilts by Carol... someone. Veerrrry cute projects. And they're applique! I can do that - it's the piecing that's got me puzzled at the moment.
Had fantastic fish for dinner. I love cajun fish. Any fish, but especially trout. Had trout and calamari... I'm a happy camper. The dessert/pie thing was mostly gross, but that's just as well. I didn't need any more food.
Oh, there's a place I want to go if I come through Oregon again. It's the HQ and training center for Dogs For The Deaf. You get to tour the facility, watch a dog being trained, and interact with the dogs. Considering I was actually thinking about applying to work at the facility in California (different program, same idea), this'd be really really cool.
Went swimming after dinner. There should be a law stating that hotels should state whether they have real pools, or ponds. This was a pond. A deep pond, I'll give them that. It was jam-packed with people. Oh well, sis and I had fun.
A little about Thursday -
*whimper* I left my Martha in a cage! Poor muffin-girl... she's at a kennel for kittens for the time I'm on the road - hotels and back-seats are no places for cats. I hope she'll be okay... she looked so sad in that cage.
Went to see Spiderman 2. I had a lot of fun, though there's more than a few plotholes. Like where does he keep coming up with money to pay for payphones and washing clothes when he has no job? Verrry interesting. I liked Doc Ock much more than GG, mostly because one could carry on a conversation with Doc without feeling the need to slap him upside the head to stop the machanical laughter. Oh, and the action scenes rocked. Bigtime. There were a few snerk-worthy moments, but on the whole, too much fun. Sis didn't like it much, but she's too literal for her own good. I'm not saying it's the best movie ever (FotR and Last Samurai...), but it's good entertainment.
Sorry I didn't get online yesterday, Artemis and Wen, I had a lot of packing to do. And my computer has a horrible sense of timing. I probably won't be able to get on AIM while travelling, but I should be able to sneak over to Ea once in a while. And I'll try to keep posting here. We'll see.
