Okay! So Yuletide is a holiday fic exchange, obvs! In October, people nominate small fandoms for inclusion in the fic exchange, and they sign up. Signing up entails listing which fandoms you'll be comfortable writing for (you need to volunteer for at least three, I think), and also making four requests for what you'd like to receive as your gift fic. Then the mods take a look at all the sign-ups and assign everyone another person to write for; at least one of that assigned person's requested fandoms will correspond with a fandom that you volunteered to write.
Then you write that person a 1,000+ word story for one of their four requests and upload it to Yuletide Treasure by the deadline (usually it's mid-December ish), and on Christmas morning, the archive opens! There's some other stuff involved, like people volunteering to be pinch hitters and picking up requests when the originally assigned writer drops out of Yuletide, but them's the basics. Currently, we're almost to the 'submit fandoms for nomination for inclusion in Yuletide '09!' stage.
Yes! Do I have to nominate fandoms (aka is it a requirement, or if I go all mind-blanky can I just wait until signups?), aaaaand... yeaah that's it. :D
Nominating is not a requirement! You can pick what you're willing/able to write in and what you want to see fic in from what the final list is without having to nominate any fandoms.
Nope, you don't need to nominate fandoms; my first year, I discovered sign-ups too late to do so, and it wasn't a problem at all! Official sign-ups will probably come in two or three weeks.
