Thinking before you write

Today the local newspaper ran an article about how a lady lost her dog to the evil animal shelter. All day people (idiots) were calling in saying stuff like "Is this the InHumane Society?" and other BS jokes like that. Just for the record:
She didn't microchip her dog.
She didn't even give her poor dog a collar.
Due to the fact that the dog had no chip or collar (or tattoo, or any other identification), we only held the dog as a stray for the mandatory five days. If the dog had ID, we would have held it for ten days.
She claims to have searched for the dog. Our records show that yes, people searched for that particular dog... her neighbors, her significant other, her friends... she didn't.
All in all? I'm not very impressed, either by the lady or by the newspaper. One would think they would bother to get their facts straight.
Gah. It just annoys me - we at the shelter work so dang hard. We do are darnedest for the critters we care for... and all it takes is one reporter and one stupid owner to make us out to be the villins. Why didn't the reporter come when we had to reclaim a dog who's owner beat his dog with a two-by-four? Why didn't the reporter come when the police brought in the dog rescued from a drug bust, covered in crystal meth? Why don't they come for all of the other horrific cases that come in, where we provide a warm place to sleep and safe food to eat, and when worst comes to worst, a painless death? There wasn't even anything in the article about how that poor dog could have been hit by a car or mauled by a stray dog or shot by some random idiot or caught in a trap or poisoned or... any other of the horrible things that happen to stray animals. Believe me, horrible things can happen - I've seen them. Kittens with holes where no holes should be after they fell asleep inside of a car engine... dogs brought in on stretchers because half of the bones in their bodies are broken by huge cars... *subsists into snarling incoherently*
.....
.....
Okay, a little calmer now. I wasn't happy about that.
That and the fact that Midol is obviously a placebo. I swear, this month I _will_ go to the doc and get some heavy-duty drugs. *sigh*
Complete change of topic:
I got a perfect score on my latest quiz in my main VT class! Hurrah! I've broken the cycle of idiocy I've managed to get trapped in! *grins like a maniac* Honestly, for a while there I was afraid I'd never get my brain functioning again. Evidently it doesn't like these one-month breaks. Three months is okay, a week is okay... three weeks is just enought time to shut down but not enough to re-boot. Thank goodness finals are before break and not after! That would have been ugly.

Date: 2004-01-20 10:04 am (UTC)And I've heard stories of some awful things from vets and shelter people before. I know. It disgusts me to think of how many poor animals are hurt intenionally by people who are raving idiots. And then there are the poor babies who get hurt on accident...
I really don't know how you manage to work at the shelter and still maintain any kind of faith in humankind. It must be difficult.
Yay, perfect score! Those are always good.
I know what you mean about exams before break instead of after. Having tried both, I learned that having them after break is a Very Bad Idea(tm). For me, at least, but then, my brain isn't really present to be shut down. o__o
Looks like I'm going to comment a lot on your journal entries. I'm a stalker!...Well, sorta! *scuttles back to bed, because sleep is a good thing*
