DW/Heroes.

Because Lynne said DO IT, and I can't make the bunny go away.

He storms off of the roof, not wanting, not able to face the desperation in the young man's eyes. Not another one. They always come, the young, the hopeful, the lost, the desperate, and he has always taken them in before. Usually they stay for a while, learn a little, grow into something new and wonderful that they wouldn't have had he left them where they were, and then go on about their lives, leaving him alone again.

Usually.

But that was before - before the fire, the war, the mass destruction he still cannot think about without wanting to fling himself from one of the surrounding skyscrapers. His last attempt to play savior, gone horribly wrong. Not at any fault of his own, he knows that, intellectually, but it still burns that he can (could, will) save so many others, and despite everything he tried, did not save those he cared for most. Cares for.

So he stays here now, a ghost in a machine where ordinary people are the cogs, no longer the savior, no more the mad crusader tilting at windmills. Let them save themselves for once, he is done. Finished. Put out to pasture, and not at all too soon.

Except he cannot forget the young man, the only one who has seen through his current guise, the one that oscillates wildly between hope and despair. As much as he tries, he cannot just walk away and be done with it.

It is but the work of a moment to find the name (A picture set into a larger picture of his older brother, in a story about the convoluted family history of an up-and-coming candidate for office), a little longer to find an address. He pats the computer console with a distracted sort of fondness as he leaves in search of the young man he cannot forget.

He arrives not a moment too soon. Peter comes tearing out of his apartment in a panic, as if all the hounds of hell are at his heels. It is a little difficult to contain him, but when the guard turns to cover the opening door with his gun, both he and Peter are gone from sight. Carefully he backs them both against the wall, so when his pursuit (That man, the brother, and another he doesn't recognize at all) run to the window (the window?) and the brother curses.

He could not forget this young man he keeps quiet while the three confused men tear off down the hall. It seems that once again, he has a companion.

Now, what to have Peter call him? He may be taking on a companion, but he most certainly isn't taking back the title of 'Doctor'.
