Nov. 14th, 2006 11:55 am*flops* Am all... dead. Thing. It was such a struggle to get to class today, and then once I got there, the discussion was so positively worthless I just worked on the NaNo that I'm unbelievably behind on. I think that maybe I have 1,000 words. Um. How about NaNoWriYear?
The rest of today is kinda blah too. One hour of general rounds, which up until now has been an utter waste of time. The last resident was particularly special. 'So, what do you do here' and 'Are you people even interested' are not good ways to win over your audience, no. Then Micro lab, but I have no idea what we're doing there - maybe a regrade, and finishing the septicemia unknowns... *shrugs* It's hard to be bothered. Then treatment crew tonight. Blarg. No, I am not staying past 8.
I... am not seeing where all the Gwen-hate is coming from. I thought she was more believable in the last episode than she has been before. Also, John Barrowman is doing a fantastic job with Jack. The look on his face when the little girl started talking with the fairies' voice... wonderful. Also loved all the Estelle and Jack moments. He was still totally sweet on her. So adorable.
I'm also a little disturbed at the folk who claim to be glad that the pedophile was killed, and cheered that on. I mean, yeah, he was really bad news, and deserved to be locked up, deserved punishment, and whoever let him back out after his first offence needs a serious wake-up call. But. He was tortured and killed. What makes us better than him if we enjoyed that? But then one could say that he deserved to die... I'd have a hard time arguing against that, he was a pretty hopeless case, and the fairies did 'protect' Jazmine, but it's not like they did so because he was bad and she was good. After all, they killed Estelle too, and tried to kill Jack, and did kill he husband - who wasn't the nicest sort of guy, but he was concerned about Jazmine, and some of his behavior might be put down to fear.
On a cheerier note? Cyberboyfriend guy (who's name I can't spell or remember, evidently) and Jack seem to be working out their truce pretty well. Very encouraging.
Alsoalso: Am thinking that Jack's trip through WWI was after POTW, because the fairies didn't touch him. If it had been before, wouldn't they have killed him along with the rest of his men?
Dear Davies: Give us some answers about Jack already. Love, me.
Alsoalsoalso: Why did they go for Jack in the backyard, and not Gwen? It was Gwen's house they trashed in retaliation.
Alsoalsoalsoalso: Why did they kill Estelle? There was yelling at the computer screen when that happened. She wasn't hurting them, or their Chosen one! Maybe they did it to get back at Jack, the way they trashed Gwen's house? Did they go after any of the rest of the team?
Alsoalsoalsoalsoalso: Am disappointed there were no new Gwen/Owen scenes. Very sad.
Tried to find good Christmas cards yesterday. Found some adorable ones at Borders, but they're a bit expensive for me. Then I found some cards that fit very well into my budget... but are the epitome of 'boring generic'. So. Must find the happy medium. Maybe I'll hit Target tomorrow, see if they've got anything yet.
Don't wanna go to rounds. It's the revenge of the idiotic residents. *sulks*

Date: 2006-11-14 08:45 pm (UTC)My Gwen-hate mostly comes from the fact that she tends to be the one the writers go most wrong with. I love the actress, and think she does a fantastic job, but the way she's currently being written simply irritates me. It was the scene where the writers had her point out while Jack is holding dead!Estelle in his arms that it wasn't Jack's father that was in love with her, it was him. THANK YOU WRITERS, WE GOT THAT IN THE FIRST TWO SECONDS OF THEIR INTERACTION.
It's also that their so insistent as pushing her forwards as the secondary main character, next to Jack. I wouldn't mind that, only she's a) the newest member of the team, b) the most skeptical - for no reason, seeing as she accepts Jack's immortality rather off-hand, c) There are other members of Torchwood who have been there far longer and proved they can be trusted.
It just... it doesn't ring true. She doesn't, like any character used to push a writer's agenda.
/Self-justification.
...I think I may have to write an essay on this at some point.

Date: 2006-11-14 09:48 pm (UTC)She's skeptical, I think, because... well, who expects aliens and fairies and... everything to be real? I think if Jack had come up to her and said 'Hey baby, I can live forever' she would have laughed in her face until she turned blue. But he kinda got shot right in front of her, so. Not much use denying that. Like... I think Viv said? Or Lynne? She's like Scully from X-files. Yes, she's seen weird things but for her these weird things have been firmly in the realm of science fiction for twenty-odd years. Takes a lot of getting over.
There are other members there, but they haven't had the... pleasure? Of seeing Jack pull his resurrection trick. I think that gives her a bit of an 'in' on him. Since she didn't spill that secret, she won't for others. Though, now that he did do much the same thing with the Cyberwoman, he might have to start trusting the others with more personal information.

Date: 2006-11-14 09:59 pm (UTC)I think it is probably because I play Jack that's making me oversensitive to things. The point you made about her being the one we came in with is actually one of the things that annoys me - it sometimes seems that she isn't being anything practical to do after all that, but the writers are still trying to push her forwards as the main female of the series. Which would be fine, if she had more obvious value to the team.
I did originally like her a lot, but with each progressive episode she grates a little more. Though... yeah, this last one I was sobbing incoherently for all the second half, so that may possibly have sent me more into the deep end than I would originally have gone.
I just... bleh. If she's the skeptical one, why have her around so much? Isn't that dangerous? If they get into a bad situation, they need someone to accept orders and go do something. not laugh and say... to the immortal man who leads an alien investigation team, 'fairies don't exist.'
*sigh* If people like her, I'm happy for them. And since Jack likes her, I'll be rewatching the series in order to investigate his reasoning (other than because the writers said so - and my current theory, which is that she reminds him of Rose) but for now I need something more concrete to make me like her.

Date: 2006-11-14 11:47 pm (UTC)Also to be fair, I'm one of those that finds Rose annoying as all get-out, mostly because she just doesn't rate compared to other past companions - it makes no sense that he'd get so emotionally attached to her. But he does tend to fall for the idiots - Jo Grant and Grace 'the radiographs must be wrong, charge ahead and damn the possible physiologic consequences' Halloway.
